Burt Neuborne, one of the nation's leading civil liberties lawyers, is the author of "Madison's Music: On Reading the First Amendment," an ode to the First Amendment's "narrative of democracy." The book examines how a fragmented interpretation of the First Amendment leads to gerrymandered districts, a government run by the wealthy, and the disenfranchisement of many of our citizens.
Neuborne, who was the national legal director of the ACLU during the Reagan presidency and has argued many cases before the Supreme Court, is the Inez Milholland Professor of Civil Liberties and the founding legal director of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law School. He is the author of three scholarly books and numerous articles and is a contributor to The Nation and other publications. Neuborne played Jerry Falwell's lawyer in Milos Forman's "The People v. Larry Flynt" and was the Court TV commentator for the trial of O.J. Simpson. He lives in New York.
